As anyone who follows celebrity culture knows, the relationships of the rich and famous often don’t last long. However, it seems like recent years have been especially hard on these relationships, leading to some shocking celebrity breakups.
These celebrity breakups run the gamut from marriages and long-term relationships imploding to broken engagements, and months-long pandemic hookups falling apart. However, it’s not all bad. In the wreckage of one of these breakups, one of the most famous celebrity relationships of the early 2000s rose from the ashes like a phoenix (back tattoo).

The split between baseball legend Alex Rodriguez and all-around entertainment legend Jennifer Lopez was probably the most shocking of 2021. The super-couple first got together in 2017, and were quite public with their mutual affection for each other on social media. The duo got engaged in 2019, and seemed prepared for “happily ever after.” However, after a failed bid to purchase the New York Mets (oh those billionaires and their whacky hobbies) they split, allegedly at J.Lo’s insistence. Months later, she reunited with Ben Affleck for “Bennifer 2.0.”
The relationship between Transformers actress Fox and 9010 actor Green had a long history of breakups and make-ups over the years. However, by 2019 the married couple seemed to have settled down with their three children. However, wedded bliss would not last as Fox led the marriage in late 2019.
Rihanna began dating Hassan Jameel in 2016, shocking many fans who’d never heard of the Saudi Arabian billionaire. The couple’s relationship ended sometime in early 202o, with the Bahamian singer commenting, “When you’re overwhelmed, you need to start cutting things out. And I’m overwhelmed too much.”
The summer 2020 split of television host Ryan Seacrest and Shayna Taylor shouldn’t have come as a shock to those who were paying attention. The couple had split three times over the course of their three year relationship.
Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson and Anheuser-Busch heir Jacob Busch got together at an indeterminate point in the last several years. However, the global COVID pandemic combines with the age difference between the two (she’s in her early 40s, he’s in his late 20s) took a toll on the couple, and they’d split by early 2021.
For years, comedian John Mulaney had spoken openly about how his wife Annamarie Tendler AKA Annamarie Tendler stood by him through addiction and mental health issues. However, fans were shocked in 2021 when the couple announced they were ending their 7-year marriage. The story was further complicated by Mulaney (seemingly) entering a relationship with Olivia Wilde – who we’ll see later on this list – very quickly.
In 2019, Zoe Kravitz married Karl Glusman in a lavish ceremony on her father, rock star Lenny Kravit’s Paris estate. Their wedding seemed like the start of a fairytale marriage… until early 2021, when it was announced the duo were getting divorced followed by Kravitz posting a meme of a drag queen dumping a bag of trash on Instagram,, with the trash bag being labeled as “People, places, and things that no longer serve my greatest and highest good.”
Easily the most expensive breakup on our list, the end of Bill & Melinda Gates’ marriage shocked the world. The couple had been together for over 25 years, and their foundation was one of the most powerful in the world.
Gerard Butler had long be known as a cad in Hollywood, however, the actor seemed to have settled down with real estate developer Morgan Brown in 2014. Sadly, the relationship wasn’t meant to last and split in the summer of 2020. According to sources, Butler was left devastated.
All due respect to the other couples on our list, but there was no bigger in late 2010s pop culture than “Kimye.” The relationship between Kardashian and West was documented everywhere from reality television to tabloids from the duo’s inception in 2012, their marriage in 2014, and the north of their children. However, by early 2021, Wests increasingly erratic behavior led Kardashian to file for divorce.
Former MTV star Kristin Cavallari and NFL quarterback Jay Cutler were together in the public eye for well over a decade, highlighted by a reality television series. However, the couple’s 7-years marriage ended in 2020, amid allegations from Cavallari that Cutler engaged in “inappropriate marital conduct.”
Talkshow host Wendy Williams didn’t seem to thing much of her months-long 2020 relationship with Mike Esterman, saying of their breakup, “The headline is that Mike and I have broken up; well, I didn’t know that Mike and I were together.” Ouch.
Daily Show host Trevor Noah and actress Minka Kelly (best known for Friday Night Lights, Titans, and, uh, dating Derek Jeter) began dating in early 2020. Things allegedly got serious enough for the couple to move in together only months later. However, the relationship had cooled by 2021, and the couple split.
We know 2017 might not be all that recent, but we’re still in. hunting over the end of Anna Faris and Chris Pratt’s marriage!
Obviously for Ben Affleck to be able to reunite with Jennifer Lopez, the Batman actor had to be single, which meant the end of his relationship with actress Ana de Armas. the two had begun dating in 2020 during filming of the movie Deep Water.
Wilde and Sudeikis had been together in 2011 and their relationship included two children. However, despite a 2013 engagement, the couple never married. The dup split in the fall of 2020, with Wilde quickly becoming with comedian John Mulaney. For his part, Sudeikis said of the breakup, “I’ll have a better understanding of why in a year, and an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it’ll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle.”
The relationship between comedian Bill Hader and actress Rachel Bilson seemed like an odd match from the start. Not shockingly, their quarantine relationship ended after just a few months.
Actress Taraji P. Henson and former NFL player Kelvin Hayden got engaged in the spring of 2018, with plans to marry in the spring of 2020. COVID put a halt to those plans, and the couple’s entire relationship was over by the end of the year.
Pretty Little Liars actress Ashley Benson and English model Carla Delevingne dated from May of 2018 through April of 2020. The couple’s split seems to have been cordial, however, as Delevingne went out of her way to defend Benson from fans on social media who accused the actress of moving on too fast.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Valladares spent a great deal of time together in Australia during lockdown, often sharing photos on social media of surfing, skiing and other outdoor activities. However, once lockdown restrictions ended, it seems Efron’s career pulled the couple apart.
Fans of The CW’s Riverdale-verse of shows were shocked when Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale’s FP Jones) and Katy Keene star Lucy Hale began a relationship. Why? Well, for starters she’s 22 years younger than him. The duo split in less than four months.
In December of 2020, Tyler Perry announced Instagram that he was “51, single and wondering what the next chapter in my life will look like.” This was the writer/director’s was of confirming he’d split with longtime partner Gelila Bekele, with whom he had one child.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan first announced their separation in the spring of 2018, however fans held out hope that the couple might reunite. Said hopes were officially dashed in 2020 when the couple’s divorce was finalized.
How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel and Alexis Mixter ended their 8-year relationship with a joint social media statement that read in part- “…change happens and we made the decision quite a while ago to let ourselves grow away from what our relationship had been and into what it was becoming.”
Katie Holmes and chef Emilio Vitolo Jr.began dating in late 2019, shortly after the actor ended her relationship with Jamie Foxx. The duo were seen at numerous Manhattan hotspots, however, their relationship fizzled in 2020.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were another couple with a… tumultuous past full of breakups, make-ups, and general drama. The couple seemed to put all that behind they when they wed in 2018. However, after less than. year of marriage, the couple announced their operation in August of 2019, with their divorce being finalized in early 2020.
Elliot, then known as Ellen Page married choreographer Emma Portner in 2017. While Portner was publicly supportive when Page came out as transgender in 2020, the couple separated that summer. Their divorce became final in early 2021.
