For some US residents, it is now impossible to get home insurance - and all because of the climate crisis

I just read an article about how some folks in the US are being denied home insurance because of climate change. It’s crazy! Apparently, insurance companies are denying coverage in high-risk areas prone to hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. And the situation is getting worse as climate change intensifies.

My cousin actually got hit with this problem last year. She lives in California, and her insurance company refused to renew her policy due to the increased risk of wildfires. She had to scramble to find a new company willing to take her on, and she ended up paying more for less coverage. It was a giant headache.

But it’s not just individuals who are affected by this. If more and more people are denied coverage, it will make it harder for cities and towns to recover from natural disasters. And it could ultimately lead to a financial crisis in the insurance industry, which could have ripple effects throughout the economy.

The bottom line is that climate change is having real-world consequences that we can no longer ignore. It’s not just about melting polar ice caps or rising sea levels. It’s affecting people’s lives and livelihoods, and it’s forcing us to reevaluate our assumptions about what’s possible and what’s worth fighting for.
